Whenever current flows through a coil, two things are formed:
1. Heat
2. Magnetic field lines.

Since magnetic field lines are formed, if a magnetic compass is kept above or below a conducting wire such that the north pole of the needle is in the direction of flow of current (or the south pole can also indicate the direction of current, there is no problem), the magnetic needle deflects because of the magnetic field formed.
