Answer:

(a) Insectivorous plants trap insects because they grow in soil which is usually thin and is also poor in nutrient. So for making themselves rich in nutrients they eat insects. Some pitcher plants contain mutualistic insect larvae, which feed on trapped prey, and whose excreta the plant absorbs.

(b) It is necessary to replenish the nutrients into the soil because all the nutrients that soil has are used up by the plants during their growth so for the continuos supply of nutrients to the plants it is necessary to replenish the soil again and again.

(c) Mistletoe is a parasite – it steals water and nutrients from trees. Most mistletoe seeds are spread by birds, which eat the berries and defecate on tree branches. If attached to a new host tree, the parasitic seed releases a compound called “viscin”, which dries to form a stiff biological cement.
