When we strike a matchstick against the rough surface, it produces fire. This is due to friction. As the two surfaces are stroked , and due to friction , the surface gets heated. In the tip of the matchstick it generally contains phosphorus , pottasium which helps to light up .

When the matchstick is strike against the rough surface of the match box, some of the red phosphorus is converted into white phosphorus; this immediately reacts with potassium chlorate in the matchstick head to produce enough heat to ignite antimony trisulphide and starts the combustion of matchstick.
