This happens bcos in the hot food temperature is high because of which its gas molecules gain high kinetic energy and reaches to us by the process of diffusion and it in the case of cold food the temperature is low so the kinetic energy of molecules of gas is also less.

this happens because the temperature of food is higher so its smell gets diffused in the air faster and can reach some distance away
If the food is cold its temperature is low so its smell doesnt get diffused in air as quickly so to smell it one has to get close...
hope it helps
