Phosphorus is a very reactive non-metal. It reacts with air and catches fire. However, it does not react with water. Hence, it can stored in water as it wont react with water.

Reactivity . Must be stored underwater for safekeeping to prevent it from catching fire spontaneously in the air . Red phosphorus is more stable than white phosphorus and is made up of long chains of phosphorus atoms .
