  • It is mainly because H2SO4 is a strong dibasic acid. For it to be completely neutralized in order for a normal salt to be formed, an equimolar amount of the alkaline is required, otherwise an acid salt is formed. HCl has only one replaceable hydrogen ion, hence it requires a lesser amount of alkaline than sulphuric acid to get completely neutralized at a given volume.
  • H2CO3 is dibasic but a weak acid, ie, dissociates incomplete in aqueous medium. If it react with a strong alkaline, the resulting salt will be basic for a given volume.
  • In conclusion, the number of free hydrogen ions present in a medium upon the dissociation of an acid determines its acidity.
