Answer:

So ionic compounds do not conduct electricity when they are solid, but they do conduct electricity when they are dissolved in water or when they are melted because in molten state these ionic compounds forms ions. these ions are responsible for the conduction of electricity.

hope this helps u!

Ionic compounds in solid state do not conduct electricity, whereas in molten state are good conductors of electricity, because -

• The elements of the ionic compounds are chemically bonded which each other by the ionic bonds.

• In the ionic bonds, the valence electrons are transferred between the anion and cation of the compound.

• So,in the final ionic compound, there are no free electrons that can conduct electricity.

• But,in the molten state, the ionic bonds get broken and cation, anion get released which can easily conduct electricity.
