When iron articles are new they are shiny because they have a protective covering and also they are packed. But when they are left unused for 1 or 2 months, a reddish brown coating is seen on the surface.
This is because on coming in contact with oxygen (mainly water vapour) the protective coating wears off and RUST (reddish brown flaky substance) is accumulated over the surface of iron articles.
Hope this will help you.
