Alums are double sulphate salts with the formula,AM(SO4)2.12H2O where A is a monovalent cation like potassium or ammonium & M is a trivalent cation like aluminium or chromium. These crystallise in octahedral crystal structures can accommodate ions of only specific size.Size of lithium is small as comparison to potassium & ammonium & therefore cannot be accommodated in the crystalline structure.
