it is because size of nitrogen is small w.r.t. phophorous
and has not d orbital in electronic shell
so it does not show 5 covalency like phosphorous

Nitrogen doesn't show 5 covelancy because it has 5 electrons in its outermost shell and it need only three more electron to get the configuration of its nearest nobel gas and it can't expand it's orbit like other elements because they have vacant d orbital while nitrogen doesn't have.
