Plastids are refered to as semi-autonomous as they have the ability to replicate independent of other organelles. There are three types of plastids; chroinoplast, chloroplast and leucoplast.
Here are some of the reasons why plastids are self duplicating:
1) They have their own DNA which is able to code for and pass down the crucial genetic material required for the replication. The DNA synthesizes its own mRNA,rRNA and tRNA.
2)Plastids have there own ribosomes that can provide the required structural proteins required for replication independent of the rest of the organelles and nucleus.
