Both Poles are relatively cold because they don't receive direct sunlight. ... In addition, the Sun's rays have to travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere because of the angle of incidence at the Poles. In the Tropics, the Sun's rays travel through less of the atmosphere and is more direct.
