Answer:

Potato placed in water become firm and increase in size. This can be explained by an experiment called as potato osmoscope. Peel a potato and scoop a part of potato at the centre to make a hollow cup. Sugar solution is present in the hollow cup in potato. Potato is half submerged in the water. After some hours, it is observed that level of sugar solution is increased due to entry of water into the potato. Here potato acts as a semipermeable membrane.
