Give reason's for the following statement:-
1 Alpha particles were slightly deflected in Rutherford atomic model
2 Nucleus is positively charged
3. Sodium is a good reducing agent where as chlorine is good oxidising agent
4 Covalent compound exist in all the three forms
5. Inert gases are chemically inactive

Answer:

  1. Most alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil, which implied that atoms are mostly composed of open space. Some alpha particles were deflected slightly, suggesting interactions with other positively charged particles within the atom.
  2. The nucleus is a collection of particles called protons, which are positively charged, and neutrons, which are electrically neutral.
  3. Sodium (Na) loses electrons and forms Na+ ions and thus acts as oxidising agent while chlorine gains electrons and forms Cl– ions and is thus a reducing agent. Sodium hydroxide solution (in water) reacts with hydrochloric acid solution (in water) to produce sodium chloride solution and water.
  4. The covalent compounds are formed by sharing of electrons between the atoms have similar electronegativities.Hence the bonds are weak. So they can exist in all three states.
  5. An inert gas is a gas that does not undergo chemical reactions under a set of given conditions. The noble gases often do not react with many substances and were historically referred to as the inert gases. Inert gases are used generally to avoid unwanted chemical reactions degrading a sample.
