Scavengers play an important role the food web. They keep an ecosystem free of the bodies of dead animals, or carrion. Scavengers break down this organic material and recycle it into the ecosystem as nutrients. Some birds are scavengers.

Scavengers provide an imperative service that always seems to go unnoticed.  Many individuals in our society depict scavengers to be gross, ugly, and evil creatures that feast on the innocent dead animals in the wild.  The only true part of the aforementioned sentence is the fact that they feed on the carcasses of dead animals.  Common scavengers that are widely known to the public are vultures and hyenas.  The picture above displays a vulture in a way that is just WRONG.  In the picture, the vulture comes across as an evil bird that is only out for the flesh of its peers in the wild.  What people don’t know, is that scavengers like the vulture, have a large responsibility that rests on their shoulders.  Scavengers benefit our ecosystem in many ways, but their main contribution is how they keep our environment clean.  They are symbolically known as nature’s garbage collectors.  As an animal passes away, its body is now left behind without any maintenance or upkeep.  This carcass will start to rot away into the Earth which will cause damaging effects to our environment.  This is where scavengers come to the rescue.  Scavengers will eat the flesh of the animals all the way down to the bone.  These animals have evolved over the years in ways that allow them to do their job more effectively.
