Friction is defined as the force opposing the motion of moving bodies, The word opposing refers to going against. If the motion of the body is forward then the direction of friction is backward.

When you slide a box across the floor some portions of the box when magnified under the microscope is not perfectly smooth. It is very rough with downs and ups portion. The portions of the floor is similarly corrugated with up and downs portions.

This rough portions will make motion slower just like a wood passing through a rasp file.
