Sodium reacts vigorously with oxygen or moisture present in the atmosphere. Kerosene helps to prevents it from coming in contact with oxygen or moisture. It catches fire easily if it comes in contact with either oxygen or moisture present in the atmosphere it will react but without them it won't react. You just need to understand the function of kerosene.
