Downward Filtration Theory is a theory of education which was adopted in India during British rule. This was based on the principle of filteration which is selecting a few.

The British used this theory to select education for the people of India. They wanted to educate only a few people that belonged to the upper caste in Indian Society, so that they only get useful people to work for them and then those people can influence the lower strata people.

The causes of failure of Downward Filteration Theory were:

● Too many english educated people came out in the field and it was impossible for government to give them suitable employment according to their expectations.

● The introduction of education to upper classes created a feeling of self-respect, national honour and independence in them.
