The front part of the wind vane has smaller surface area than its rear part because when the wind blows it presses more on rear part so that it aligns in the direction. So the front part is smaller than the rear part.

Answer:

A wind vane is an instrument that shows the direction of  the wind. The front portion of the wind vane shows the direction where the wind is coming from. The wind vane has been designed in a way that the front part is smaller that the rear  part to enable the smaller area to turn to the wind. The smaller end direction is the direction which the wind is flowing  from and the larger part is where the wind is flowing towards.
