You see, any orbit around the sun has two points called the aphelion and perihelion- which are the points furthest and closest from the sun, respectively. (For objects orbiting Earth, those same spots are called apogeum and perigeum. Don’t ask me why.)

As the earth is at the perihelion, it’s at its fastest at 30,300 m/s. As it “rises” to meet the aphelion 5 million kilometers above, gravity causes it to slow down, until it reaches 29,300m/s. That’s a difference of 1,000m/s!
