Even though Water covers 71 percent of the earth's total surface area, only very little can be used by humans because:
1) Around 97 percent of the total water present on the earth's surface is just saline water which cannot be treated manually and cannot be consumed by humans.
2) The left out 3 percent is freshwater found in the form of surface water and underground water and only surface water which accounts for about 63 percent of freshwater is used for human consumption.
3) The surface water has further sources of lake, rivers and swamps some of which is inaccessible. Therefore, only 0.3 percent of surface water is used for human use.
