The treads or grooves on the tyres actually help the vehicle to get better grip and control when the roads are wet and also while the vehicle is moving on loose terrain.

The reason behind how the treads provide such grips is that the treads are designed in such a way that they allow water to be expelled from beneath the tyre.

Consequently, this would prevent hydroplaning.  Hydroplaning occurs when there is a loss of traction between the tyre and the road due to the layer of water formed between them.
