You can only see the parts of an object that reflect light towards your eyes, for the obvious reason that any light reflected away from you never reaches you. Diffuse reflections therefore help because they imply that light incident on an object is to some degree reflected in all directions, which means that at least some of the light will reach you. Contrast this with the ideal specular case, where the reflected light leaves in precisely one direction, and unless you happen to be in that direction you won’t see a thing.
