Weeds are unwanted plants which grow along with the main crop and compete with them for water, space, nutrients and even light. The overall losses caused by weeds is a just like a hurdle in the path of crop production. Thus, the eradification of weeds from the crop fields during the early stages of crop growth is a primary concern.

We must know:

The process of removing weeds from a crop field is called weeding. Weeds are controlled by the following methods.

 \large{ \rm{methods \rightarrow \begin{cases} \red{ \rm{mechanical \:methods}} \\  \red{ \rm{cultural \: methods}}  \\  \red{ \rm{chemical \: methods}} \\  \red{ \rm{biological \: methods}} \end{cases}}}

⚠️ Mechanical Methods - Weeds are uprooted by hands or by using trowel (also known as khurpi). Also many times the farmers removed the weeds by ploughing, tilling with the help of Hoe. They are also burnt or flooded(it can cause pollution, so not in use mostly).

⚠️ Cultural Methods- They include methods like preparation of proper seed beds, proper sowing of crops, intercropping and crop rotation.

⚠️ Chemical Methods- In this, the weeds are destroyed or killed by using weedicides/Herbicides like 2,4-D, MCPA, Butachlor, Atrazine etc.

  • 2,4-D ➯ 2-methyl, 4- dichlorophenoxy acetic acid.
  • MCPA ➯ 2- methyl,4- chlorophenoxy acetic acid.

⚠️ Biological methods- In this method, biological organisms like insects or organisms are put in the fields which eat only the weeds. They selectively destroy the weeds. Examples:

  • Cochneal Insects are used to eradicate weeds like Opuntia(prickly pear)
  • Some crops like soyabean, millet etc. donot allow the growth of weeds. Thus they are known as Smoother crops.
