Answer:

There is a concept of Greater India recognised by many historians and anthropologists, it covers areas from eastern borders IE. Burma, Thailand, Laos, Combodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia , Indonesia to Phillipines and many Pacific islands.

The spread of Hinduism or Indian culture is more to do with merchants than conquerors.

Since time immemorial East Indian kingdoms and South Indian kingdoms have been trading with south east countries, settling there and bringing in aspects of religion, culture which have today become integral part of the culture of these geographies.

The kingdom of CHAMPA in present day Vietnam finds mention in many Indian myths.

In 3rd century Ashoka became the first King to send envoys to these geographies to spread Buddhism.

Later the influence of traders and seafarers ancient lands of Kalinga present day Orissa and Chola kings helped increase the influence.

During reign of RajaRaja and Rajendra chola they launched military campaigns across the Bay of Bengal and conquered these lands their influence was such that Bay of Bengal was referred to CHOLA LAKE.

There are many examples of Indian influence but would quote few :

A. The largest Hindu temple across the globe is Angkor Vat in Combodia.

B. The largest Buddhist temple is at Borobudar in central Jawa.

C. Ancient city of Thailand Ayutthiya is named after Ayodhya.

D. The kings of Thailand are said to be incarnation of Vishnu and the Name RAM is part of their name with kings given number as Ram 1, Ram 2 etc.d the present King is RAM IX

E. The airlines of Indonesia is GARUDA.

F. The name Singapore is derived from Singha + Pur meaning abode for Lions.

G. The Indonesians names as Sukarnoputri meaning daughter of Sukarno are sanskriised words.

H.. Jakarta is also derived from Sanskri Jaya + Kreta meaning complete victory.

I. Hinduism is practiced by majority of people in Bali, the MON community of south Vietnam are also practising Hindus.

The Khmer were originally practicing Hindus and then converted to Buddhism.

J. ERAWAN shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma is most popular temple in Thailand.

The popularity of this Shrine to Brahma puts to rest a story in Hindu mythology where it is declared there will be no temples to Brahma on earth where PUJA will be offered to him.

K. Popularity and importance of Ramayan and Mahabharata in these areas.

And many concepts which are nearer to culture of these areas have been incorporated for example story of Hanuman in these scriptures is very different from original Indian scriptures.

President Obama who spent his childhood and teenage years in Indonesia carries a small statue of Hanuman and venerates it .

Above are few examples of influence of India on south east Asia.
