because the sugar particles gets into the molecules of water.

and stone is too big to get into the molecules of water

When a stone does not dissolve in water. So, the intermolecular spaces don't get filled and the stone occupies some volume in the glass of water. As a result, the water level rises when a stone is dipped in a glass of water.

When a spoon of sugar is added to it and stir well. The sugar disappears but the level of water in the glass does not rise, which means sugar gets dissolved in water and thus the volume of water has not increased.

The sugar particles being smaller get adjusted between the water molecules. This shows that there is intermolecular space in the water.
