when we breathe in air is forced into the the lungs and they inflate like a ballon lifting our ribcage and diaphragm is flattened. on the other hand, when we breathe out air is expelled out of the lungs shrinking their size and the rib cage is brought back to its original position and the diaphragm now attains a dome shape.
