this is all because of speed of the ball and the force of the hit

According to Newton's second law of motion, the fielder has apply a small force on the ball.

The ball also exerts lesser force & the fielder does not hurt his farm.

If the ball is stopped suddenly, then the entire momentum of the ball will be reduced to zero in a very short time interval which will cause a larger rate of change of momentum.

As a result, the fielder will have to apply a larger force on the ball. Also, the ball will exert a larger force which might hurt the palm of the fielder.
