Answer:
All lines of longitude run from the North pole to the South pole and the North pole they all come together at a point. When they are at the equator each degree of longitude is 60 nautical miles apart. So the lines are converging as they move north or south of the equator. However as you travel east and west on any particular line of latitude the distance between degrees of longitude will be the same as long as you stay on that line of latitude. Because the distance separating lines of longitude is converging the mariner never uses the longitude scale for measuring distances and always uses the latitude scale to measure distances. Each degree of latitude equals 60 nm. Each minute of that equals 1 nm.
