I used to always catch it like that as a good practice recommended by my Friends. Two reasons
Your chances of dropping is very low, because you wait for the ball to safely come to your hands, most catches are dropped because of fast hands into the ball and you have less chances of catching it on a rebound in that case.Right Technique: The fast moving ball needs accurate technique to catch, you reduce risking an injury to fingers by lowering the hand so that the contact with hands is more or less gentle and the ball won’t wobble after catching. See how slip fielders catch the ball, especially low catches, they wait till the last moment and take it comfortably (there are always exceptions, sometimes you need to react differently to a ball which is flying above your head which requires you to time your jump correctly).

the cricketer moves hand back during catching to reduce momentum by increasing the time
momentum= mass× velocity
velocity = displacement/time
increase in time decrease velocity and it will decrease momentum
