Both boron and aluminium have very high sum of the first three ionization enthalpies. Hence, they cannot lose electrons to form ionic compounds. Instead they form covalent compounds.

B and Al have strong forces of attraction whereas the other elements in 3rd group have weak attraction due to addition of extra shell.B and Al have high IE so they tend to form covalent bond rather than ionic bond because it cannot lose electrons.
