Give reason why Canals are an effective source of irrigation in India .

Most of the canals provide perennial irrigation and save the crops from drought conditions.

ii. The sediments brought by the canals are deposited in the fields. They add to the fertility of the soils.

iii. The canals, which are parts of multipurpose river valley projects, provide cheap source of irrigation.

iv. Although the initial expenditure is very high, but it is quite cheap in the long run.

Canals are the second most best source of origination in "INDIA".These irrigate those lands which have large fertile soils,large plains and fertility.The plains of 'NORTH INDIA' are mostly irrigated by them.They took up their place after tube-wells.Thus,the canals are the effective source for irrigation.Hope it helps you...........
