Granaries are large store rooms for storage of food grains like wheat, rice, pulses, millets etc. When there is a good harvest and surplus of such food grains, then the surplus grains are usually stored in granaries, for long term use.

However, granaries have to be maintained in very hygienic conditions so that the grains do not get spoilt. Unhygienic conditions in granaries may attract rodents and other pests which eat and damage the stored grains. Damp and humid conditions may cause mould and fungus to grow inside the granaries, thus making the grains stored within, inedible.

Hence, granaries must be maintained in clean, dry and hygienic conditions.

Storing grains in a proper manner is the most important process after harvesting from the receptive plants. Spoilage in grains will be the result if the grains have not been treated in a proper way before storing.

Food grains must have to be dried under sun light before storing in order to eliminate the moisture content in the grains. Moisture content of the grains will lead to spoilage of the grains by the growth of fungus and molds when they are stored.  As like the grains the granaries must have to be maintained in a proper way without any moisture in it.

Usually dried grains can be stored in gunny bags or metal containers with some dried Neem leaves in order to prevent the intervention of insects and moths.
