it is because, in certain cases the head of the state might go under any pressure.
And also it is better to choose it by council of ministers because they would have a great knowledge about administration and other all.
so, it is according to my point of view.

Hey buddy here is ur answer..
It is very simple. I agree with everyone’s answer here.
But the indirect election of the president has a higher philosophy behind it.
Indian constitution does not want to give complete authority to a single person. So this Electoral college concept for electing the President of India is one of the many checks and balances present in it.
President of India is first of all an institution and not a single person.
Please bear with me as i am going to explain the concept in a different way. Do let me know if i am wrong or if i should change the way i express my ideas!
It is something like, people give power to their representatives to help them make their lives better(Legislature).
Those representatives come together and decide that they will work in a particular fashion (Framing of Constitution).
They have to pass laws, orders etc and every time everyone cannot sit together and decide on everything. So they give some executive powers to few of their colleagues and this has to be passed vide an institution(president)
Now we need an institution(somebody like a police) which can coordinate everything that is happening in this country and this institution must protect and defend the basic principles (constitution) which have been promised to the citizens by their representatives. So they elect the president and give her the final authority.
The president works on behalf of all the elected members.
So ultimately her decisions are always the decisions of the majority of the people.
