As far as I know,

there are two steps of respiration--Glycolysis and Krebs cycle. Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell where glucose is broken down into pyruvate (incomplete breakdown of glucose;pyruvate is completely useless for us). In Krebs cycle pyruvate is broken down into carbon dioxide, water and 38 molecules of adenosine triphosphate. These are the molecules which store energy. this stage takes place in the mitochondria of the cell. So, mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
