solids usually are made up of rigid particles packed close to each other disabling movement. but each cyrstal of salt or sugar is very small. so when they are poured into any container or placed somewhere they take the shape of their respective surroundings

sugar and salt have very small particles so as a whole when kept it any container they take the shape of container but as an individual particle they are in their crystal shape only..
