Because it would react with oxygen to form so2 (but it does need catalyst like v2o5) and then in presence of excess air it forms so3
So3 is acidic in nature (forms h2so4 when reacted with water)
Also, if only so2 is formed, it is still acidic in nature (so2 forms h2so3)
