Give reason why the glottis is guarded by epiglottis

The glottis is guarded by the epiglottis to prevent the swallowed food from entering the wind pipe, preventing choking.
As the food passes the pharynx, the epiglottis closes and closes the entrance to the wind pipe and the food enters the other opening into the oesophagus.
