Because The Gulf Stream causes rain and keeps the harbours clean from being frozen due to long winters.

This occurs due to the effect of the warm North Atlantic Drift, which is a continuation of the Gulf Stream. At the Cape Hatteras, Gulf Stream is deflected eastwards under the influence of rotation of the Earth and the westerlies, which flows as the North Atlantic Drift. From there it gets divided and flows into 3 directions, one towards Britain and the other to Scandinavia and the third to the Arctic, thus, keeping the ports and coasts of North-Western Europe open and unfrozen during winter.
