Give reason why when we sit around a camp fire , the face of the person sitting opposite to you, appears to shimmer.

shimmering occurs due to various densities of the air above the fire.
some part of the air is cooler and has lesser density while the heated air is less dense. this may happen because air from the surroundings is drawn towards the fire thus creating different densities in air.
while passing through the air of different densities the light keeps bending to and from the normal. this causes the shimmering illusion of objects beyond the fire.
