The white phosphorus catches fire very easily because of two factors :-

(i)It is reactive.

This promotes phosphorus to acquire a stable state and form compounds which are ionic or covalent compounds.

(ii)It has a very low ignition point.

This factors helps phosphorus to catch fire more easily because of its low ignition temperature.

Phosphorus can gain the heat to get ignited very easily as it is very very less and can be made available from the environment itself.

Thus, White phosphorus catches fire in the room temperature only.

After reaching its ignition point, phosphorus combines with oxygen or other gases to form its oxides, sulfides, carbonates and other compounds.

The white phosphorus burns dazzlingly in the air even at room temperature.
