White phosphorus reacts very fast with atmospheric oxygen and catches fire so it is dipped in water to prevent it from oxygen gas supply because it is insoluble in water.

1) Yellow phosphorus is highly reactive
Phosphorus (yellow) burns at atmospheric temperature (if I am not wrong at 30 degree C) So if kept in the atmosphere it readily burns to give Phosphorus penta oxide
2) It doesn't react with water
3) It is heavier than water
(The reaction when it burns in the air - -
P4 +5 O2 = 2P2 O5)
Red phosphorus is not kept under water It is not so reactive as yellow phosphorus Its burning point is 260degree C
