Answer:

1) A dam has broader walls at the bottom than at the top to withstand the great pressure of water which increases with increase in depth.

2) Heavy trucks have broad tyres because broad tyres have large area of contact and less pressure on the ground.

3) Area Heavy tanks have broad chains called caterpillar tanks which considerably increase the area of contact. The tracks help the tanks to distribute its wieght more evenly over a larger surface area than wheels can . This prevents it from sinking in areas where wheeled vehicles of the same weight would sink.

4) The pressure exerted by the sharp knife edge is more than that exerted by the blunt one because the area on which force is exerted with a sharp knife is very small. Thus, it is easier to cut with the former than with the latter.

5) School bags have wide straps so that their weight may spread over a large area of shoulder producing less pressure on the shoulder.

6) Wooden sleepers are set below the railway tracks so that the pressure exerted by the rails on the ground becomes less and the railway lines do not sink into the ground so that accidents can be avoided.

7) Camels can walk easily in the desert because of their wide feet. Their wide feet allow the weight of their body to act on a larger surface of land reducing the pressure exerted on the land by the camel. As we know, pressure exerted and area are inversely proportional.
