a) As you learned, scientists standardized the short-hand way we represent elements, by their chemical symbol. One of the main reasons this was developed was because using letters was the easiest way to represent the elements. Another reason that we use chemical symbols is to allow us to write chemical formulas easily.

b) In addition, many things in science are named in Latin because that was considered the language that highly learned people would use. Therefore, some elements have multiple names and in some situations, the formal name and the name used for the abbreviation are different
