The outer space is of black colour because it lacks matter which can reflect some light. ( it's refering to most of the outer space)

Why black and not other colours?

Black is not a colour it's just the absence of colors. If there is no matter we are not supposed expect any colours out there .That is why the outer spaces black ( from outer space, we are referring to the space outside the earth's atmosphere)

Why is the sky appears blue from the Earth then?

For us, the sky appears blue in the daytime. This is because the particles in our atmosphere scatter the violet light a lot more than others. The the short wavelength of blue light is the reason behind it.

Hence we can also say:

There is no atmosphere in the outer space which, which means no particles to scatter light, makes it look black.

Answer:-

Let's firstly understand about the condition of possibility of colour in sky!

Any colour of sky is only possible when there is scattering of light. Light can only be scattered in presence of atmosphere. Light rays need some particles to be scattered.

------------------------------------------

Why does sky appears dark beyond Earth's atmosphere?

There is no atmosphere outside the Earth and thus there will be no particle which will scatter light. For the sky to be visible with any colour, there must be particles which would further scatter light rays. Since there is no particle, as a result the colour of sky is dark in outer space.

What is scattering of light?

The phenomena by which ray of light bends or deviate from its path after striking any surface is called scattering of light.

Extra Information:-

• Light rays of longer frequency bends or scatters the least.

Red colour has the longest wavelength.

• Light rays of smallest wavelength bends or scatters the most.

Violet colour scatters the most, as it has smallest wavelength.
