Answer:
People lose bone mass or density as they age, especially women after menopause. The bones lose calcium and other minerals.
The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae. Between each bone is like a gel like cushion ( called a disk) The middle of the body (trunk) becomes shorter as the disks gradually lose fluid and become thinner. So as we grow old, cartilage becomes rigid.

As we grow old, cartilage becomes rigid:
- With age, cartilage deteriorates naturally, which can cause in the soreness of it.
- The smooth tissue which cushions joints and helps them in the movement more easily vanishes with age.
- The body’s natural shock absorbers start wearing out. We also lose muscle tone as well as bone strength as we get older.
- That makes us feel helpless while doing physically demanding tasks and taxing on the body.
- Bones end up becoming more brittle and break easily as their density decreases.
- Altogether height decreases because the trunk & spine shorten. Breakdown of joints leads to the inflammation, stiffness, deformity.
- Joint changes affect almost every old person resulting in postural deformities.
