Iron articles can be easily corroded due to its contact with air, moisture and etc. So to prevent this corrosion chrome or chromium plating is done.

chrome is less reactive than iron. iron reactes with oxigen present  in air easily that's why iron articles are plated chrome to prevent it's reaction.
