Give reasons for the author's choosing of voluntary poverty ?
Answers
Explanation:
Gandhiji did not chose voluntary poverty. He was as much rich as his other contemporaries. That is why he could pass Barrister degree from U.K. and practice as a lawyer in South Africa. From his experience in South Africa, he found that affairs of human beings are not so good to cherish. While he was in South Africa he came to know that affairs of Indians are so pathetic under British regime. He came back to India to fight against the British misrule. On his return to India, he joined Indian National Congress, an voluntary organisation working for the upliftment of people, and transformed it into a frontal organisation to fight against British and secure independence, along with Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Annie Basant and a host of leaders.
When he was on a travel, he happened to see a lady standing on the river side drying her cloth in sunlight, while one part of the dress still being clothed on her body. When he enquired she told him that she has no alternate dress to wear. Then he gave his dress to her. Thereafter he used to wear only ‘dhoti’ on the understanding that several of his countrymen have no dress to wear. He was called as “Half Naked Fakir” by Winston Churchill. But it cannot be ascribed as voluntary poverty.
