Give reasons for the following:
1. Diamond & graphite are allotropic modifications of carbon.

2. Both carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide turn lime water milky. Moist potassium permanganate paper, helps in distinguishing the two gases.

3. Lime water finds application for testing both carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas individually.

Questions and Answers :-

1. Diamond & graphite are allotropic modifications of carbon.

Ans:- Diamond and Graphite Diamond and graphite are two allotropes of carbon — pure forms of the same element that differ in structure.

2. Both carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide turn lime water milky. Moist potassium permanganate paper, helps in distinguishing the two gases.

Ans:- Carbon dioxide (CO2) turns lime water milky due to the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate, CaCO3.  Sulphur dioxide (SO2) also does the same, but slowly, as it reacts with calcium hydroxide to form insoluble calcium sulphite.

3. Lime water finds application for testing both carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas individually.

Ans:- Carbon dioxide does it because it reacts with calcium hydroxide (limewater being a solution of that) to form calcium carbonate, which is insoluble. ... Carbon monoxide does NOT turn limewater milky, unless it is contaminated with some carbon dioxide.
