Give reasons for the following
1. Pushing a car is easier than pushing a truck .
2. Why does a fall on a hard surface hurt more than a fall on a sandy surface ?

Question 1:

  • Pushing a car is easier than pushing a truck because the car has much lesser mass and weight as compared to that of a truck.

  • Due to higher weight , the truck experience is more friction and is difficult to push.

Question 2:

  • Falling on hard surface hurts more as compared to you falling on a sandy surface because :

  • When we fall on hard surface the change in momentum of a body is very fast and hence we experience a higher force. This causes more pain.

  • But , on a sandy surface the change in momentum of the body is much slower and hence we experience lesser force.

Question 3:

  • Fielder pull back the arm a little bit while catching a cricket ball so as to decrease the rate of change of momentum of the ball.

  • This would decrease the force exerted by the cricket ball on the hand.

  • Hence , the fielder would not get hurt while catching the ball.

Question 4:

  • Cars are provided with seat belts as safety devices.

  • If the car suddenly stops due to inertia of motion the passengers have a tendency to move forward and might hit the dashboard of the car.

  • Seat belts prevent this forward motion during sudden stopping of the car and hence prevents accident of the passengers.

  • Karate players are able to break a whole pile of brick at one blow because they exert a huge momentum on the the pile of brick.

  • The rate of change of momentum of the hand is very high resulting in generation of a high force.

  • This high force can break the whole pile of bricks.
